According to the population projection published by the Census and Statistics Department on 30 June 2004, by 2033, the number of elderly people will exceed approximately 2 million, 27% of the overall population in Hong Kong. That means there will be one elderly person to every 4 citizens, and it has been estimated that more than 10% of these elderly persons will be living alone. However, the number of PE Link users is still lower than 10% of the elderly population. It is apparent that many elderly people, chronic illness patients or carers for the elderly are not yet aware of our PE Link Service. Therefore, the staff of our Promotion and Education Department visit elderly service providers, local bodies, volunteer organisations and medical personnel regularly to introduce the PE Link Service and its operation.
In addition, the Promotion and Education Department works to educate the elderly about home safety and give them information about the PE Link through lively talks and seminars, road shows in housing estates and tours visits, etc. Local activities organised in the past have included: PE Link - Caring for Public Housing Elderly; Elderly Alliance for Precautions in Winter; Home Safety Day for the Elderly; Eat Well, Clothe Well, For Your Good Health; Elderly Home Safety in the Millennium; Health Carers Coalition; and the Hong Kong Elderly Safety Drama Competition, etc. All these activities were well received by the elderly care service providers. Furthermore, we have also jointly run educational programmes with RTHK Radio 5 called "Home Safety with Fun" and "Smart Tips for Home Safety", promoting home safety and a healthy way of life to all the elderly in Hong Kong through the radio.
We have also launched a series of campaigns to remove the labelling effect of the PE Link, with a view to creating a healthy and positive image for users of the PE Link Service and clarifying common misconceptions about users. Activities held have included the Super PE Link Ambassadors and The Blessing of Safety for the Elderly Poster Design Competition.
